Villeneuve om Cleopatra-remaken: "mycket svordomar och mycket sex"

Snart tar stjärnskottet Denis Villeneuve sig an sci-fi klassikern Dune och sedan raskt vidare till en nytolkning av Cleopatra. En nytolkning det hitills varit ganska tyst om. Tills idag. Remaken tycks bjuda på en annorlunda, och måhända mer vulgär upplevelse än 1963-års original.

Denis Villeneuve har många järn i elden. Efter en grym uppföljare till en 80-talsklassiker (en bedrift som torde vara omöjlig) tar regissören nu sikte på en remake av David Lynchs klassiker Dune. Dock blir det ingen vila eller ro för Denis som efter Dune ska regissera en nytolkning av 1963-års mastodontklassiker Cleopatra. Idag tar regissören bladet från munnen och berättar om sin infallsvinkel på källmaterialet:

It’s similar "All the Money in the World" in that there’s a lot of research involved and there’s a question with all that of how do you want to do it and how do you make something new out of it? With Getty, part of the idea was to take two genres we felt we knew, which was the kidnapping genre and what we’ll call the ‘great man’ genre — the ‘Citizen Kane‘ genre — and smash them together and make something new out of them. With ‘Cleopatra’ … instead of doing the movie as the prestige picture — the three-hour, lots of pageantry, people with fans and English accents and all that stuff — we really treat it as a political thriller. Dirty, bloody, lots of people swearing and having sex and all of that other stuff and just treat it as a two-hour, lean, mean political thriller, full of assassinations, etc. Just going the opposite direction from the way we think that movie is going to go.

Det låter onekligen som att Cleopatra goes full Game of Thrones med denna inriktning? En personlig uppfattning är att en remake alltid bör tillföra något nytt och vrida och vända på källmaterialet och här tycks Villeneuve ställt in siktet helt korrekt.
